Questions
Everything people ask about Middly, in one place.
What Middly does
- What is Middly?
- Middly is a free iPhone app that finds fair places to meet in London: areas you can both reach in the same time on public transport, and the pubs, cafés and restaurants in them.
- How does Middly decide where's fair?
- Middly works out everywhere each of you can reach by public transport within a set time, at the time you're travelling, and finds where those areas overlap. It starts with the shortest travel time that gives you somewhere to meet, so neither of you has a much longer journey than the other.
- Why not just use the halfway point on a map?
- Because distance isn't travel time. In London, one person might be near a fast line while the other needs a bus and two changes, so the halfway point on a map can be a short trip for one of you and a long one for the other. Middly compares travel times instead.
- What kinds of places does it suggest?
- Cafés, pubs, restaurants and parks. You can pick one type or several, then compare ratings, prices, opening hours and each person's journey.
- Which transport does it use?
- Public transport across London, including the walk to and from stops. Travel times come from TravelTime, using London's public transport timetables.
- Can I plan a meet-up for later?
- Yes. Choose a day and time, and whether that's when you're leaving or when you want to arrive. Middly uses the timetable for that time.
Using the app
- Is Middly free?
- Yes. Middly is free to download and use. It shows a small banner ad.
- Do I need an account?
- No. There's no sign-up. Your recent searches are kept on your phone.
- Can more than two people use it?
- Right now Middly finds places for two starting points: you and one other person.
- How do I send a place to a friend?
- Open the place and tap share. You can send it on WhatsApp, iMessage or any app on your phone, with a map link so they can find it.
- Can I get directions?
- Yes. From any place, open directions in Citymapper, Apple Maps or Google Maps.
Where it works
- Does Middly work outside London?
- Not yet. Middly covers London for now. More cities are planned.
- Is there an Android version?
- Not yet. Middly is on iPhone (iOS 15.1 or later), and an Android version is planned.
